Alice Braga is a Brazilian actress, born in São Paulo but best know for a role she did as a typical “carioca girl” (carioca is as brazilian call people born in Rio de Janeiro), Angélica in 2002’s highly acclaimed City of God. Since then, we can see her career to grow big and very deserved.
Early life
Braga was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Her exposure to the world of acting came at an exceedingly early age. As both her mother, Ana Braga, and aunt, Sônia Braga, are actresses, Alice often accompanied the two to film sets and it did not take long for her to develop an appreciation for all things theatrical. She started out her career by appearing in school plays and even a few commercials, but it wasn’t until she was a teenager that she began seriously pursuing roles in television and movies.
Career
In 1998, Braga made her debut in a Portuguese-language short called Trampolim, but quickly receded back into anonymity to finish her schooling. Her big break came in 2002 after she was cast as Angelica in the critically acclaimed smash City of God, for which she received a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the Cinema Brazil Grand Prize. Since then, her life did a big change: she left the classes of Body Arts (she did in PUC, São Paulo), and traveled through America filming. She had met great names of the movies world, did more than 10 movies,
films, did was applauded in Cannes, did won eight important (included the international festivals of Verona and Miami) prizes, appeared in the main American magazines (including Vanity Fair, Nylon, Esquire…). Well, Lili, as she is called by the old friends, spent the last five years to conquer the world.
In 2003, after 14 years, she back to USA. In February, she spent some time in her aunt’s home, in New York, promoting City of God. In August, she moved to USA for six months to learn the language.
Back to Brazil, another great movie would make her name, again, be acclaimed for the public: the stripper Karina, from Lower City . This character was already guaranteed for actress Fernanda de Frietas, however director Fernando Machado decided to think better, and changed his main actress. So he called Alice, that received the invitation when was studing Communication and Arts of the Body in PUC, São Paulo. In the same year, she was in an international production with the Mexican star Diego Luna (with whom had a romance), Solo Dios Sabe.
Still in 2005, she took a role on the popular Brazilian television program Carandiru, Outras Historias. Braga made her English-language debut in 2006 with a starring role opposite Brendan Fraser, Mos Def and Catalina Sandino Moreno in Journey to the End of Night, which premiered at the 5th Annual Tribeca Film Festival and eventually went straight to video in North America.
In 2007, Braga was cast in the Will Smith blockbuster I Am Legend, and the drama Crossing Over (which stars Harrison Ford, Sean Penn and Ashley Judd). Additionally, she appeared in the 2008 David Mamet film Redbelt, in which she appears alongside Tim Allen and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
